Often times in desolate lava fields the resilient ʻōhiʻa lehua tree is the first sign of life after a devastating flow. The ʻōhiʻa lehua with its strength, stature and ability to thrive in a variety of climates is symbolic of the work of the Big Island Substance Abuse Council.
Since 1964, BISAC has been inspiring individuals and families to reclaim and enrich their lives in the wake of the ravages of substance abuse. We offer a continuum of services that are culturally appropriate and aligned with the ever-changing behavioral health field. Our highly professional and caring staff are deeply committed to delivering services through our intensive outpatient, therapeutic living, adolescent school based services, adult mental health and Po‘okela vocational programs that truly make a difference in the lives of persons served and make our community a better place to live.
Third Circuit Court, State of Hawaii
Over the years, BISAC has supported the success of numerous drug court participants. Drug court admits only those individuals who have the most difficult legal and substance abuse problems. Inmost instances, drug court is the last resort before prison. BISAC has helped these people turn theirlives around by providing treatment services which reflect impressive knowledge and skill. Also noteworthy, has been BISAC’s flexibility and compassion in making the extraordinary effort to give a participant the chance to be successful.

BISAC has been a partner of Bay Clinic for many years. They have been a pu?uhonua for many of our patients who struggle with addictions. Much Mahalo to Dr. Hannah Preston-Pita and her wonderful staff.
BISAC has been an ongoing supporter of the Hilo Y’s Men and Women’s Club Annual Christmas Tree Sale. True to BISAC’s spirit of community-indedness and service, they provide much needed man-power to unload, trim, and display our Christmas trees. They also assist our customers by helping them select and carry their trees with a true spirit of Aloha. Their invaluable help, along with other volunteers, make our Christmas tree sale possible each year.
God’s blessings to you!
